Listed below are the functions of the UMT Sailing Centre.
The Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT) sailing training center which started operating on 1 August 2019 has become the best platform in producing more young sailors in Malaysia. It also makes the university involved a leader in sailing-related programs among Higher Education Institutions in Malaysia.
In addition, the existence of the Sailing Training Center is aimed at inculcating sailing to the community in Terengganu in general, especially among UMT students themselves.
It started as one of the practical subtopics of the Maritime subject offered to students and student participation in the organization of regattas in Malaysia.
The center is also developing the academic aspect and research in the field of sailing at the Higher Education Institute level in addition to increasing activities related to sailing in the youth development program as well as organizing commercial activities and professional courses.
The center also runs the University's social responsibility program (USR) through activities carried out in the local community including primary and secondary schools around Kuala Nerus and Kuala Terengganu.

The establishment of the UMT Sailing Center is one (1) of the seven (7) Big Ideas that were discussed during the "Strategic Plan Retreat of the University Board of Directors and Key Officials", Universiti Malaysia Terengganu on 25 - 27 January 2019 in Putrajaya. Following that, a visit by the Chairman of the UMT Board of Directors and the UMT Vice Chancellor to the Terengganu State Sports Council (MSNT) Sailboat Training Center at Duyong Marina Resort was conducted on 12 March 2019 to see for themselves the training facilities and cooperation opportunities between UMT-MSNT to established the UMT Sailing Center.
